There Are No Miracles
I wrote this after watching a wonderful, powerfully moving film about a child dying of cancer, while around him people prayed for miracles that never came. That image of people unable to live in the reality of life without feeling the need to call on some higher power that can make everything come right in the final reel of the movie, in the best Hollywood tradition inspired this song - no, there is no cosmic pattern there’s no purpose beyond our understanding, no redemption, just life, suffering and death, with the occasional chance of joy in between that we should grab with both hands when we get the chance, without burdening ourselves trying to match the expectation of a non-existent authoritarian master….
What Was It We Both Wanted
The non-blues version of what was originally a blues song
I Was Dreaming Of Your Beauty
This song is actually based on a dream I once had, or at least on the parts that I could remember when I woke up.
If Not Me
If Meat Loaf is reading, I think you’d do a great cover version of this …
This Trouble On My Mind
Currently my favourite song …
An Open Letter to Harriet
Inspired by real events with a real person, who’s name obviously wasn’t Harriet. But if the real Harriet ever hears this, and wants to get in touch; to quote Bob, “I’m not that hard to find”
Broken Dreams
Another song inspired by real events
Rattling Them Bones
I am so desperate to play this song live …
What Love Has Done To You
I didn’t set out to deliberately sound like Tom Waits in this song, honest - it just happened!
