The CD that started it all …
Roll On Down
Every singer-songwriter needs a song about trains, and Roll on Down is mine - this is an old track, written back in the mid-80s, and one of the few songs I sometimes play acoustically. No Long Farewell, Small Change & Saturday Night are the other tracks from that era.
For My Part
This song features Julie Jankovik on backing vocals; we met in Rwanda, and it’s a lasting regret that I didn’t know just how beautifully she could sing until I recorded this with her on her last day in the country … I love the way a certain vulnerable innocence in her voice combines with my cynical gruffness - and I hope we can collaborate on something else one day!
Small Change
I don’t do many cheerful songs. In fact, other than Saturday Night that closes this CD, I can’t think of any cheerful songs I’ve written - but even so, I think this is probably the least cheerful of the lot ….
Crippled by this Cross
At 11 ½ minutes this is the longest song I’ve ever written, and in my opinion the best - I once played at an open mike and, after 2 songs, asked the M.C. how much longer I had. We let people play 3 songs, he replied. I think they might have revised that policy after this …

I wrote this in Liberia in around 2009; featuring Dave Bonney on guitar in this version, and still one of my favourite songs.
Saturday Night
I think this is the only song I’ve ever written that can truly be called cheerful … the hero of the tale can easily be dismissed as a moocher, but it’s about someone who has chosen to follow a less standard life path and live by his own rules …
